Zygomatic complex fractures in a Nigerian tertiary hospital: An update on the pattern of presentation and care

Aim: The Zygomatic complex [ZMC], being one of the most commonly fractured bones in facial skeleton, is largely underreported literature. This study was designed to evaluate pattern fractures, symptomatology, and treatment modalities at our institution. Materials methods: Information on patients’ sociodemographics, radiologic diagnosis, were accessed from records trauma register. Data collected analyzed with SPSS 20 level significance set p < 0.05. Results: A total 105 patients aged 19-66 years had ZMC fractures during period. male preponderance observed [M: F = 3.8:1] road traffic crashes [RTC] accounted for majority [79.0%]. There a statistically significant relationship between RTC among age groups [X2 33.61, df 5, 0.001]. Fractures zygomatico-frontal [ZF] combination zygomaticomaxillary [ZM] sutures commonest finding imaging [39.1% % 28.6% respectively]. Subconjunctival circumorbital ecchymosis [92.4% 91.4% respectively] symptomatology. Eighty four (80 %) managed via surgical intervention employed modality mini plates [1.0mm] fixation across either ZF [n 33, 39.3%] or ZM 21, 25.0%] suture lines. Conclusion: revealed that remains major aetiology plate ostheosynthesis mainstay management. Enforcement safety regulations speed use protective measures by users imperative.
